Are thread protectors important?

Do I need a thread protector, or can I just skip it to keep things lighter?

Thread protectors are important. If you damage the threads on your muzzle, you will have a bad time if you ever want to attach something. Trying to save weight by not using one is pointless.

Thread protectors seem useless till you mess up your threads. Then that little cap feels like a cheap way to prevent damage.
