Last season, I headed out for a late whitetail hunt, feeling all pumped up to try this new tree stand setup I had in mind. I made sure to get there before sunrise, climbed up, and got myself comfy in my spot… only to realize I had left my release back in the truck. For context, I shoot a compound bow, so without that release? I was basically just enjoying the scenery.

I ended up sitting there for hours, watching deer casually wander by, all the while knowing I couldn’t take a shot unless I was ready to attempt some medieval finger-pull disaster.

After that little mishap, I decided it was time to get my act together. Now, I have this pre-hunt checklist I run through every single time. I've even taped it inside the lid of my gear box as a constant reminder of that chilly, regret-filled morning. Lesson learned?
