Road Trip with a Gun

Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I'd like to bring a firearm with me, but I'm realizing that going through New York State makes things more complicated. Skipping NY adds an insane amount of drive time, so I'm really weighing my options. I've heard different opinions on how to handle this. It'd be great to hear if anyone else has been in this situation and what choices you made. Any tips or advice would be appreciated. Doesn't have to be perfect, just looking for some guidance.

I went the long way. I avoided the potential trouble of certain States. I picked up a concealed carry permit. The Alaska permit was good in 37 States so I could go most of where I wished to go.
